Websites like Yahoo and MySpace earn money from advertisers. When you see an AT&T advertisement on Yahoo's home page, that means AT&T paid money to Yahoo! to place that ad there. Advertisement space on a website like Yahoo is worth big money, because there is so much TRAFFIC there.
Consider billboard ads along the interstates and freeways of our country. Why are they placed there? Because tens of thousands of people will see that ad every day. The value of advertising space is measured by the exposure it will receive. So an advertisment placed along the interstate costs MUCH more than an ad placed near a bus stop. The same is with sites like Yahoo and MySpace. The founders of both companies knew that all they had to do was to create a great website that millions of people would visit everyday, and large companies would start throwing money at them to give them premium advertising space. And the companies usually pay for ads on a "per impression" basis. An "impression" occurs every time an ad shows up on a page that a person is viewing. So everytime you see an ad on Yahoo, a company has paid a few cents for YOU to see that advertisement. I've included a link to learn more about how banner advertising works (of course, banners are just ONE style of advertising online - there's Flash, popups, search links, etc). Hope that helps!

They sell advertising space and also sell information on websites you visit. That's why you get so much junk email related to stuff you've searched for in the past.

of course advertising . . what happens is, the bigger the web site, the more popular (like google's deal with mtv) people with products aimed at young people will fight to advertise now on google, which will probably cost a small fortune . . .so that's how they make their revenue . . .
