My fiance left the police (long story but he had a bastard of a tutor who left him with no option but to leave). now he is applying to the prison service. Thing is on the form it asks why you left the last job and he's stumped he can't tell the truth but can't think of a viable alternative, any ideas???

the reason he gave to his old place was that he needed 'life experience'. the only way he could guarentee he could come back in a couple of years.

The thing with CVs is that if you lie on them you are bound to be found out, especially with position in places like the prison service - they will check your background out.

Perhaps he could put the police on his CV but not really mention the real reason he left, perhaps say he left for personal reasons - which is basically true....

I work in recruitment and it is always much better to see someone is honest - I would never put someone forward for a position if I thought they were a liar....

Good Luck

Well, the "Interested in career change" would work, as does the "attracted to the idea of a Prison job", but you do not have to put your reasons of leaving on your CV, (If you do decide to not mention it till possibly the interview, cut out ALL your 'reason for leaving' lines.

When I was asked why I left one of my previous employers I just said truthfully I did NOT get on with the Office Manager (she was a REAL bully, and make things hell for me), and the person employed to replace me only stayed 2 days.

Leave it blank.

Alternatively, refer them to section 1 of the official secrets act 1989 (c6).

He would say that he wanted a change of career since it is the truth anyway. There is no way on this earth would you say that your boss was harsh even if he was to your prospective employer. This would lead to automatic rejection of your application.

Just wanted a change in career direction. Will they not write to his last place for a reference??
