As you all know, BP has "shut down" a major pipeline in Alaska because of corosion. My question is this: if they've pulled in record profits the last few quarters, why can't they spend some of that money on fixing/maintaining their pipeline? Why hasn't the government intervened?

They can't pay someone to check on the pipe line? Corrosion doesn't happen overnight.

Why would you defend a company that's screwing you out of money? If the price of milk goes up, farmers/milk companies (if there is such a thing as a milk company) lose money, they don't pull in record profits. If their going to shed the loss completely on the consumer, I'm saying, why can't they check their pipeline once in a while?

CORROSION DOES NOT HAVPPEN OVERNIGHT. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED. Why can't you people see they are raping us?!? Every week they have a new reason to raise gas prices. All I'm saying is, with all of the money they have pulled in, couldn't they have hired someone to maintain the god damned pipe line? Someone could have looked at the line and said "hey, it looks like that pipe is starting corrode, maybe we should do something about it before we have to shut the entire thing down."

They did not know that this would happen, obviously.
Companies are very imperfect and communications are imperfect as well.

they profit went to the shareholders where else would it go?
yes they used x ray system and not the pig. The pig causes the pipeline to be closed down and due to the high demand of oil, they were surprised by the corroding it will cost them a fortune in lost production. They were and are quite willing to fix the problem and keep their asset current. They made an error that will cost them a fortune. The government did intervene they forced the pipeline to close down after a leak

The pipeline has corroded even though BP has pumped millions of gallons of aniticorrosion liquids through it. They found the problems on routine inspection and are taking corrective actions. They are doing exactly what you want them to do. The government is not taking action because BP is doing more than the government requires and they are doing it before the government asked them to.
