my g/f thinks her 15y.o. son needs an automobile. We live in Indiana where i believe you have to have a learners permit until your 18. He has only been 15 for a few months.

It would be a personal choice; personally, I had to get a job and buy my own used vehicle to practice in as my Mom did not want me to practice with HER car. I would strongly suggest that the child earn the car, not that is just be given a car...kids in my class that were given cars seemed to be more careless and quicker to wreck them then I did, when I had to earn it by the sweat of my brow.

It is legal, but with certain conditions. Per the Indiana BMV website the extent that a 15 year old can operate a vehicle are:

"Extent of Driving Privileges:
The holder of a driver education learner permit may participate in practice driving after having started an approved driver education program when accompanied by:

a certified driving instructor in the front seat of a car equipped with a dual brake, or
when accompanied in the front passenger seat by a parent or guardian who holds a valid driver license. Once the holder of a driver education learner permit has successfully completed the driver education program and the driver education instructor validates the permit (i.e.; classroom and behind -the -wheel grades, school stamp(s) or seal, completion date an instructor signature) then the holder may participate in practice driving if the front passenger seat is occupied by a parent, guardian, stepparent or other relative with a valid driver license in his or her possession. "

Good luck!

Only if the child gets a job to pay for a car insurance and teach responsibility. School grades will always suffer when there is a car to ride around in. Night time young drivers with there friends are very likely to be in a accident with death and injury

If he's responsible enough to know the rules of the road and has at least 200 to 300 hours of driving experience on highways and traffic combined, then yes he desserves a permit at least. I've been there, and responsibility is key to owning a vehicle, anything less would be unexceptable.

I would say no, unless the kid needs it for work or getting to school. Unless he is extremely mature and responsible, getting an automobile for a 15-year-old boy is asking for trouble or tragedy.

here in ohio. teens can get their temporary license(still need a license driver next to them) when they are 15 1/2yr.
and hold this for 6months before going to get drivers license.
and at this age they have to take a driving school class and get the certificate.
I think if the parents trust their teen and think they can handle being a responsible driver, its up to the parent. the parents choice.
since you are not his parent, then you have no say: only his mom does.
my daughter got her temporary at 15 1/2yr old, and now she is 16yr and is getting license.
it costs me: 20$ for the temporary packet and 260$ for the driving class. but they need this before age 18yr. here in ohio.

but my daughter is working to buy her own car. just like my parents did for their 8 kids when we became old enough to drive.
