I´ve just finished writing a manuscript, and I want to go ahead editing it for publication. What´s the best way to go about doing that?

The best way to do it is to hire a REPUTABLE editor or agent to get the ball rolling for you. If you can't afford that, then there are TONS on websites that can help you prepare your manuscript for submission. Most manuscript submission policies differ, so it's best to check with the people you'll be submitting to to find out which method is right for you. This can usually be done through the publishing company's website.

You could edit it yourself, or you can have a friend that you trust edit it for you. If you want a professional job done then you should hire a freelance editer, someone who specializes in your kind of manuscript. I freelance, but usually manuscripts dealing with Political Science or Human Rights issues related to HIV/AIDS. It is best to get someone who is familiar with the topic so that they can catch errors other than type O's and grammar. There should be websites for freelancers based in your area.
Finding a publisher. If it is your first, then you'll have to go fishing and see if someone takes a bite. Look at similar pieces of work and find out who published them. That's the best place to start.

Pass the book round some friends and relatives and ask them to have a read. There'll be many thinks they pick up on that can improve your book - maybe some spelling or grammatical errors but also improvements to the structure and flow of the work.

Often a sentence can be read in more than one way because of the way it has been structured - one person might read it and understand it to mean one thing but another person may interpret it differently - a classic example being 'eats shoots and leaves'.

Once you've tidied up your work you could consider passing it to a professional proof-reader to spot the less obvious grammatical and structural errors.

Finally give the work to a professional editor. Many publishing houses have their own in-house editors and the cost of editing can be incorporated into the publishing deal.

If you wish to publish the work yourself then you'd have to engage the services of a freelance editor.

You should be able to find plenty of proof-readers, ditors and publishers in your local phone book or via the internet.

A lot of times writers just have someone they trust read it first and make suggestions, correct spelling/grammar, etc. Editing often involves cutting out parts or clarifying what you're trying to say.
For spelling, you can just run it though a spellcheck program, and for grammar too (there are options in MSWord for formal, etc so be careful) And then have someone who reads a lot read it for you and give you suggestions/criticism.
