The thing about a retreat is bringing the right attitude. If you go there with certain expectations then you are bringing "extra baggage" that will weigh you down. Instead go trusting that God has something for you there and take things as they come. It may be meeting a certain person or having some quiet time alone with God or having a great time with a group of people or something else. Just go with an expectation that you will find something to be thankful for that you can share with your friends when your return.

I went on an Arvon creative writing course which was a bit like a retreat. I think they would be useful to help you get over a breakup but otherwise, I would get a bit lonely after a day or so.

Read 'Haunted' by Chuck Palahniuk, it's about a writer's retreat in an old theatre that goes horribly wrong!

I went on a weekend retreat with the Western Buddhist Order and found it really uplifting. It's great to be around like-minded individuals but with enough space to be able to fully focus on what you are trying to achieve.
I do solitary retreats as often as I can to recharge my batteries and keep in touch with my goals.

During retreats, people who went with you will do a lot of reconciliations, reflections, regrets and anyhting possible...

The effect is good but in most cases, you'd get changed only for that day...
