On marriage day also the girl (bride) and the boy (groom) tie their palms as a vow to remain together for whole life performing the duties for each other and maintain the marriage keeping the "Fire" as the witness. But the day you are referring to is called the festival of 'Raskhee' on which girls tie a string around the right wrist of their brother wishing divine protection against their duty to defend their society and country, besides the womanhood of their mother, sister and all other females in the society.

I know this festival you are talking about, it's called Rakhi and it's today, isn't it? But I never thought of it as being similar to what happens during marriage. After all, the brother only vows to protect the sister, not to marry her!
The main idea is that the woman gets a male protector, so you can give a rakhi to somebody who is not your real brother but who becomes so by receiving it. Throughout Indian history there were also cases of women rulers who sent rakhis to men rulers asking for protection. Nowadays however, this festival seems to celebrate mostly the bond between brother and sister.

NO ITS NOT MARRIAGE......its called RAKSHABANDAN::Raksha Bandhan (the bond of protection in Hindi) or Rakhi (राखी in Devanāgarī) is a Hindu festival which celebrates the relationship between brothers and sisters. It is celebrated on the full moon of the month of Shraavana and in 2006 it falls on August 9.

The festival is marked by the tying of a rakhi, or holy thread by the sister on the wrist of her brother. The brother in return offers a gift to his sister and vows to look after her. The brother and sister traditionally feed each other sweets.

It is not necessary that the rakhi can be given only to a brother by birth; any male can be "adopted" as a brother by tying a rakhi on the person, whether they are cousins or a good friend. Indian history is replete with women asking for protection, through rakhi, from men who were neither their brothers, nor Hindus themselves. Rani Karnavati of Chittor sent a rakhi to the Mughal Emperor Humayun when she was threatened by Bahadur Shah of Mewar. Humayun abandoned an ongoing military campaign to ride to her rescue.

The rakhi may also be tied on other special occasions to show solidarity and kinship (not necessarily only among brothers and sisters), as was done during the Indian independence movement.

IT IS NOT MARRIAGE. This festival is called Raksha Bandhan: the sister ties a 'rakhi' or decorative thread on the brother's wrist, then she performs 'puja' ; seeking blessings from God in full faith that her brother will always protect her and look out for her. Then they both feed each other sweets, and in return the brother gifts something to the sister out of love.

In a Hindu wedding ceremony the husband and wife garland each other and walk 7 times around the havan yagna or 'fire', while the priest chants mantras.

No its the sacred thread called 'Rakhi'. Only sisters tie it on their brothers wrist and not vice-versa. It implies that the brother shall protect her from all evil.

During marriage the thread tied is by the priest to the bride and groom and at 'katha's' this thread is tied by priest to all listening to the religious tale (katha).
