I am applying for a job in the city, the 1st interview I attended last week. At the interview itself I was invited back in again, and told they would call.
Yesterday, they called and asked me if I could see them this week. Now - my boss wont let me out for anything till next week due to holidays and the office being short staffed, which I explained to the potential new employers. They promised to phone back to see what they can do, but i've yet to hear anything.
Thing is, a friend of mine has now emailed me saying they wanted to make a decision by the end of the week - its got me in a panic. Have I blown my chances because I cant get the time off work? What would the best way to deal with this situation be? I'm emailing the lady who's dealing with the vacancy, but not sure what to ask, etc. Any help please!!!! I need this job!!!!

I cant go off sick, thats the problem. I have a very good relationship (NOT LIKE THAT!) with my current boss, and have been completely honest with him about this. Probably a bit stupid but too late now.
Its not my dream job, but the money is unbelieveably good, and my boss just cannot give me a pay rise to match this in any way.

Regardless of the fact I asked if I could be interviewed after work this week instead - they have decided to go with the other person
Bit upsetting - but you're right, if they cant see I have the integrity and dont want to let my employer down, then i'm not interested. Never mind - things happen for a reason. Thanks for everyones answers!

I wouldn't consider working for a company who expects you to take time off from your current employer. Your integrity is much better than theirs... if they're in such a hurry to hire, why not do it when you get off work? I suspect their reason is that they just are too lazy to work overtime.

If it is the job which you really want then do whats best for you and take a day or some time off for it.
Companies cannot refuse unpaid leave as you are entitled to it!
Ring the lady, do not email her. Speak with her and tell her that you have tried and sorted it out so you can now have the interview after all and this will also show the new company that you are willing.

Call the person performing the interview and explain that you do not want to put your current company at risk when they are short staffed. Then ask if it would be possible to arrange an iterview off hrs (before or after your shift even a saturday). It really shows that you dedicated to your company which means you would show the same dedication to them. Integrity is a hard quality to find when I am looking to hire. I would jump at the chance to rearrange my schedule to find someone that shows that much concern.

If they liked you they will hold on or perhaps offer to interview you outside of normal office hours or by phone. I very much doubt they would discount you from the process because of this - after all everyone understands that you can't risk your current job for the possibility of a new one.
Phone them again to check if there is any news and relax, getting stressed won't help anything and if they won't wait for you then they clearly didn't think you were that great anyway.

The answer is yes they can revoke a request for a second interview, but my experience is that they won't. If they genuinely believe that you are the right person for the job and honestly want to see you again with a view to employing you then they will wait a few days to see you. If not then did you really want to work for a company that is more concerned about there timing than your welfare?

They are in complete control, and they can do what they like. Since clearly you can't get time off work, your two options seem to be to explain to them and ask to see them next week, or see if they would be able to arrange your interview this week but outside working hours. Do not take the time off work, as you could end up with NO job!

hen u apply for a job go by their rules they give u a chance dont blow it and ask for this is not good thingy they have a time limit.. so.. and as far as ur old boss u have to eb sneaky and say im puking sick if this job potential means this much to u ur gonna lose old one anyway people are entitled to be sick is human and natural.. and yea i hate lies and not beign sick but to get time off if u dotn have a vacation day coming u got to do what u have too.. i think u blew the job tho as they cant be dicked around u need to go when they say go their giving u a chance if u can go still GO come hell or high water if this means a lot to U ask her if there is any chance it can be later that day I woudl go when she says hun .. seriously..

I have been in this situation before, if they really like you they will try and make every effort to see you. Like someone has already said the only way to get around it seems to be either going before or after work for the interview. Seriously, if they are that interested they will understand the predicament you are in. Good luck x

Yes they can revoke it, there's nothing binding.
I think you should email the lady, explaining that you're very sorry but are unable to let your present employer down this week, as you would never let them down should they employ you (get some brownie points). Tell her that you're awfully sorry you're holding up the selection process but as you're very keen on the job/company you be most grateful if they could accommodate you at a convenient time.
