I hate going to job interviews, and having them expect to hear you "toot" your horn. It just sounds like bragging to me, and I hate ppl that brag about themselves. How do you tell about all the things you CAN do, w/o sounding so cocky?

That's the idea.
Your bragging to get a job.
Not to get respect from your acquaintances.
There is a huge difference.
Tooting your own horn means to talk about your accomplishments and must be honest.
Bragging means trying to gain undeserved respect and is often embellished.

I'm with you, where do you draw the line? There are certain personality types that will state their accomplishments as facts and are often seen as arrogant where no arrogance was intended. These same types will also state their faults just as readily and just as factually if asked. I happen to be that type which is INTJ, less than 2% of the population and "the scientist", a very difficult group to understand if effort is not made to get to know the true motivations for interaction. Tell an INTJ they have no merit, no basis for facts and be prepared for the "battle" sure to come, tell an INTJ they might be failing in human interactions where the scientist can find no exact data and be ready for the reply "You might have a point there...I shall look into it." So excellent question, How do you respond without "bragging"? I think you should be honest, if they misinterpret the statement then maybe it would just be a constant source of irritation anyway. You can bridge, to be sure, communication gaps, but is it really worth the effort. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Peace.

Hi Raphael! No it is not a sin! It can be the virtue of humility . Moses did not mean he thought he was the one as powerful as the Lord. Yet in anger he misspoke. And his humility before the Lord showed he was repentant. Moses did not sin with his misstatement but he let his self guidance and anger rule his speech. Haughtiness is the sin.Humbleness is not. I would toot my own horn since I know God IS Love! I am happy and would let all others know of the Good news available for the asking. Standing for love is worth shouting about the happiness of your pride.

Well if you tell the truth with sincerity and show them how your skills and experience can contribute to the well being of the organisation, that is good enough. OF course during the interview you are selling yourself, and telling them why hiring you will be an asset to the company. Try to speak more about how the company will benefit and not always just about yourself.

telling about your accomplishments and skills is not bragging -- if told in a friendly and affable way ,, (bit of humor helps too)
but be very aware of the other person (s) you are interviewing for -- showing interest in them perhaps asking a few questions --- depends on the situation --
just be confident (not overconfident) and, above all, friendly

Why do you want too? If you are good and doing decent things you don't have to say a word. Your reputation speaks for itself.

When you go on an interview your selling yourself.
