Should I tell them to stop, and tell them to do it more in the afternoon?

Find out the city bylaws in your town. Usually there is a time when people cannot make noise ( in my town it's after 11 p.m. and before 7 a.m.).
I would think that 5:30 a.m. is way too early. If they are breaking the bylaw you have the right to call the police or complain first.
If you know the people well, you can try speaking to them first or you can have the law handle it.

They are probably starting early because it gets so hot to work on the roof. I'd talk to them and ask them to start a little later (in my neighborhood, contractors aren't allowed to start work before 7:00 a.m.). If that doesn't work, you can call the police and complain about the noise. It won't make you popular with your neighbors, but you will get some more sleep.

Your neighbors are disturbing the peace.
Call the police, but be sure to tell them you want to remain anonymous, otherwise you may end up in court testifying against your neighbors if the police find other problems (like drugs, etc).
Your problem will disappear after the first police call, however, they will probably start at the first legal time, which the police will inform them of - and you too, if you ask them.

I understand that they are probably trying to get something done before the hot sun beats down on them.
However, 5:30am is not being very considerate of others. You should ask them if they can wait and do it in the early evening. Let them know the noise is disturbing you.
If you get no cooperation from them, contact the police.
(or wait until you think they are in bed and trying to get to sleep and blast some Black Sabbath out of your stereo in the yard next to their house!)

Get up a little earlier and start banging on your roof they might get the hint then. If you get along with them you could ask them if they wouldnt mind leaving it to a little later to work on roof. If you don't get along give them as good as they give you, when their trying to rest you put on loud music or start hammering .

you can either talk to them about it or stuff something in your ears when you sleep or sleep early so you can wake up early and not be bothered by the noise coz you're already awake you can also try listening to music or something till they're done, or use their noises or hammering as a beat to sing to.I do it sometimes.

If you can't fight it, join them. Go to bed early to get enough sleep and then take them over some rolls and coffee.
