i work nites too 7p-7a...
keep your house dark on the days you work-only use light when getting ready to go back to work again-this will help train your mind to sleep.
take a warm shower and if you usually eat before going to bed-make it something light.
i have a nature sounds machine by my bed and it has a 30 min timer on it so it shuts itself off after i fall asleep-any drugstore should have one of these and they're not expensive and work great.
you can also try using earplugs-any home improvement store should have these-my boyfriend works nites too and uses them to sleep during the day-he says he doesnt hear anything when sleeping.
if all else fails-try taking bendadryl or tylenol pm-these are both non habit forming and should help you sleep. take 25mg of benadryl every 6 hours. it's what i use and i don't feel groggy when i wake up.

Dark windows, and 'Do not disturb' signs. On my days off I go to bed late and take cat naps during the day. So my body knows I need to sleep in the day. Don't eat or drink caffeine 4 hours before you sleep. A heavy stomach and to much caffeine will keep you awake. I drink lots of H2O to keep me awake at work. (I'm running to the bathroom all night.) I have my kids leave the TV volume on low, that soft quiet sound helps me sleep. I have 3 kids, ages 12, 9, and 4. I'm also a single parent ! No husband, or ex to help me.

Try taking an antihistamine (like phenergan - ask a chemist)- they make you feel slightly drowsy - they used to help me when i did nights (and had to sleep during the day)..
also - get an eye mask to block out the light..

I have the same problem. I completely blacked out my windows using very heavy curtains. It helps, but on days where I REALLLY need sleep, I take an Ambien.
