Because these are foreign cultures to me, of course, there are things that seem odd and strange, but that is the case with any group that is not our own.

Arabs are as a rule friendly people. They are more friendly to other Arabs, but still really open to others. They like to discuss politics and religion and will stick to their views of course, and express disapproval of others, but usually not in a mean way; this would be rude.

There are many common beliefs as between Christians and Moslems. Examples: one God, angels and devils, heaven and hell, sin and salvation, prophets, holy scriptures including the Christian Bible.

As for the treatment of women, it's important to remember that in America in the 1950's, 60's and even 70's, a woman's place was thought to be in the home, raising children. If she was to work, it was just to supplement her husband's wages, preferably on a temporary basis. Recall that until the 1920's American women wore floor length dresses, long sleeves. They could not vote or in many states, own property.

Women have an important role in Arab societies -- they are often educated and work in professions. You can see this among immigrant Arab Americans.

At a social affair, the women will all congregate with other women, the men with the men. Americans do this too, it's just a matter of degree.

So my conclusion is that Arabs are interesting people, and can provide insight into our own customs and beliefs. Ironically Lebanese, Syrian and Palestinian are the most Westernized and cosmopolitan, they get along very well in America, and have been immigrating here since the days of the Ottoman Empire.

"Arabian" refers to Saudia Arabia
We say "Arab" to refer to Arabs in general.

A great deal of them have been totally westernized. In some countries, like Morocco and Tunisia, whole social classes have adopted the French language and lifestyle. Lebanses are more European than anything else. A great deal of them speak French and English. With the advent of the "Clash of Civilization", people in the region are now "rediscovering" their once neglected identity, religion and culture. Emphasis is now laid on difference rather than similarities with the West. There was a time when Arabs, moslems and Christians alike, deemed salvation lies in adoption of the Western lifestyle and system of goverment. Now they have regained their ethinic pride and don't perceive the world as a melting pot.

They are no different in the sense that there are both good and bad Arabs. The good ones arent so much "westernized" as they are the ones who at least live good lives and are tolerant of other people (especially those of other faiths). The bad ones, well any diehard Wahhabist or extremist already falls under this category.

why dont you actually talk to one and you will see how silly your question is. Muslims are the most genuinly nice people ive ever met. far better than any "Christian" I know. well less pretentious anyways. Ive spent a lot of time in Indonesia so i base my opinions on the muslims i have known there.

The sad thing is, the bombers who blew up london on 7/7 were "ordinary" civillian muslims and I feel nothing but intense hatred for them.

If they are peaceful peope then I have no problem with them. Its the hate filled terrorists I have an issue with.

Normal people, with normal lives, who have dreams of a better future, praying that one day they would win back the respect they once had, and would be able one day to live a free life with no interference from any other country and to have the ability to stand strong and be as one.

I think they're a backwards inferior culture. Their thinking is at least a few hundred years behind the west.
