I love him. :)
My favorite movies of his (in order)are Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden and Giant. I thought he wasn't in Giant often enough, otherwise it would probably be 2nd, not 3rd in my list.
I think he was an amazing man who had a lot to offer the world and didn't have enough time to fulfill his promise. I think he's as popular as he still is because everyone can relate to him.
I feel he was misunderstood by a lot of people and that a lot of people just wrote him off before getting to know the real him.
I know if time travel was possible I would love to meet him and get to know him. He seemed like someone wonderful...

James Dean was unfulfilled promise - - - yes Rebel Without a Cause was great but how many can sit through East of Eden without cringing or not giggle during Giant - - - it is amusing getting a chance to see some of the television appearances he made during his short sojourn on Earth. He had talent, was fascinating to watch, had an edge that is still hard to genuinely find. Forever frozen in time Dean's Star will never diminish.

He was a Gifted actor but died too young to produce many things other than rebel without a cause and Giant. His Image is synonymous with rebellion, and the fifties style of dress in America.

I don't mean to disparage the man, but...I never quite "got" it about James Dean.

I suspect that his enormous popularity had as much (if not more) to do with how he resonated with the youth of his era than it did with his acting ability. I've seen all three of his major films a number of times, and it strikes me that he always did more or less the same thing. Disaffected youth, sullen, withdrawn, moody, outsider...etc.

In time, perhaps he would have shown more of an emotional range. But, with only those three performances to assess, I find it difficult to rank him with the great motion picture actors.
