I have conducted many interviews in my days and they can mean both things. I have said that to the 1st of 30 interviews and I have used that on the interviews that really sucked that dint have much of a chance as well. We cannot commit or even give you the inclination that you will or may be hired. It's just the way things are. Companies have been sued for telling applicants that someone will call them in a few days with a decision and are never called but sent them a 'thanks but no thanks' letter.
If this job is meant to be yours, you will get it! Good luck!

An interviewers job is to determine the most capable applicant for a job. They ask tough questions and make confusing statements so they can see your reactions. You should go to an interview with confidence, and if an interviewer tells you you're the first and there are many more to go, you say something like,"Well sir,I think you can take the rest of the day off, I am exactly what you've been looking for".

They have others to interview, but to stand out ,the same day you interviewed, send a thank you letter to each person that interview you.

It means you're the first one we've interviewed and we have many more to go. They didn't hire you because they found more qualified applicants.

Do not worry. Perseverence and commitment to a cause makes it achieveable. Continue getting interviewed till you get an answer, Hey ! Congrats ! You have got this job. And we would like to get involved in our project alongwith you.

It doesn't matter...
Schedule more interviews, go on them and something will come up that is meant for you.
Don't sweat it. You will find something. Just don't put all your eggs in one basket.
Next...

that they dont want to hurt u and dont want to take u

Your suspicion is probably accurate... it's probably an easy way to tell you "no thanks." I would recommend polishing your interviewing skills... rehearsing answers to anticipated questions, dressing appropriately, using good eye contact and body language, etc.
