i think if youre both into each other, then you will miss each other, and long for each other, and yes, that will make the heart grow fonder.
if youre already bored with each other or near the end, being apart will make you feel like a burden has been lifted from your chest.... and youll realize how suffocating your relationship is and hopefully see you are lonelier when you are together, and maybe time to split!

Well, it depends on how long the two are distant. One person out of town or out of touch for a couple of weeks or so, yeah, the other does develop feelings of missing them (fonder). However, if you are talking years apart, the emotion of missing the person will fade and the heart will become less 'fonder'.
