When I asked a friend of mine what Hong Kong is like since the British left in 1997, he said that it is much better now.
Unlike some other colonies that the British left without repairing,
this time, the British government would leave, only on the condition (see Sino-British Joint Declaration: http://www.info.gov.hk/trans/jd/jd2.htm ) that there would be something in place, at least stable, to govern Hong Kong, instead of a vacuum, which many other former British colonies became.
It was settled amicably. That's a more responsible way of leaving a territory.
A lot what the world now has is a result of the empire - good and bad.

Depends who you ask.
For most people, both colonial settlers and the natives of those countries in the empire, it would have probably been better if the empire still existed. Although treatment of natives was often deplorable (slavery etc), the number of conflicts over leadership of these countries probably means that it would have been better to continue ruling these countries under the stable democracy og British rule.
Certainly for the British, we've gone right down the sh!tter since those days!

At least the Brits had the necessary education and up-bringing to do the job properly, colonization that is. The buliding of the American Empire will remain a continuous nightmare. Whereever they go, Americans get f..ked in the a..s. I am dying to see the Boys sent to the ME to do Israel's dirty job. Utter humiliation would be the outcome

well i shall tell you its better. the British Empire at one stage ruled my country, Ireland, and i will be honest we were treated like dirt. our culture was brutally put down, our religion was outlawed and and speaking our native language was punishable by death. we had to resort to terrorism, in the form of the 1916 rising and Micheal Collins and Eamon de Valera to help kick the Empire out. and we did.
and Ireland is all the better because of it.

Seeings how America wouldn't exist if Britian didn't exist (being a former colony and all) then it stands to reason that them being here makes things better...At least for me anyways.
