M20 engine timing belt alignment point is on crankshaft pulley and valve cover. Wipe all the grease off these area and you will see the alignment marks. Crank and Cam has 2 - 1 ratio. What you are looking for is to turn crank clockwise direction until the 2 points align. Also note that these engines are designed in such as way that the water pump is providing spring tension to the timing belt tensioner. Note that BMW manual shows that there is a intermediate shaft alignment point as well. When I open up the oil pan, I found out that intermediate shaft only spins oil pump so no need to align anything for this pulley.
