For Black&White prints, top of the line printers ( = fastest+high quality):
- LASER - high quality & high speed.
- Ink - high quality & moderate speed.
- Dot Matrix - moderate quality&moderate speed.

Price:
- LASER - moderate to expensive.
- Dot Matrix - moderate to expensive.
- Ink - cheap to moderate.

Reliability:
- LASER - ok
- Dot Matrix - ok - very very durable !! Able to print on Preprinted Forms Copy Carbon Paper Type - Billing purpose !! Very NOISSY !!
- Ink - moderate.

For Color Prints = Photo Quality:
- Ink - Speed: moderate but enough. Price: moderate. Quality: Very Good but using 7 color ink cartridges and special paper. No special maintenance required!!
- LASER - Speed: High (30 ppm for a full color letter size). Price: Expensive. Quality: Good. Required Special Maintenance !!! Able to print Photo Quality on Regular Paper !!!
- Dot matrix - not suitable for color prints. Is capable to print a very limited color range (3 colors).

Hint: - if you are looking for a home solution: take a LASER printer for regular Black&White prints and for Color Photo Quality go and print all pictures at a local (online) digital photo lab for less than 10 cents/ 4x6" format.

Depends on what you need.. Laser is the fastest.. and the prints are usually waterproof.. like it won't get smudged by water.. But then the Laser printer is also the costliest.. It is usually used for office work.. And they are big in size.. The black and white ones are small but whne you go for colour laser printers, they are just big and expensive !
The inkjet on the other hand is an older technology.. based on dye based inks..These printers are small too and quite inexpensive.. the printouts aren't as good as the laser.. but its really cheap compared to the laser..
The dot matrix is the oldest amongst the three.. and the worst.. they are noisy and slow.. But reallly cheap.. the cheapest.. U don't get colour prints from these though..
For home use.. inkjet is recommended..

A laser printer is top of the line. If you want a really professional appearance to documents or need to keep documents or pictures for long periods of time, a laser will not fade and the other will bleach over time. For casual use, an inkjet is cheaper to buy and ink is cheaper, and some look almost laser quality. Dot matrix is an old one and I would not consider it. Think of cost, operating expense and durability of printing and your needs.

This is according to your use, budget and quality of output required.

If you want a high quality output you have to go to inkjet or laser. Inkjet printers are not economical for long use. so u have to go for laser in case of long use and many copies.

Dot matrix is a good printer if u dont want much quality and u want to print for the whole day.

Normally the order goes as follows:

Laser, Inkjet, dotmatrix.

All have different costs to run. Dot Matrix usually is the cheapest printer to run, followed by inkjet and then laser.

Quality is the opposite (Laser, then inkjet, then dotmatrix).

It depends on what you want to do with it. Laser printers are faster than ink jet but it takes time for it to warm up. If you are going to be making hundreds of copies of something laser is the way to go but for everyday printing ink jet is your best option. Dot matrix is way out dated and by far the lesser printer.
