Ponds and frogs?

Question

We just moved into a house with a pond. The pond hasn't been cared for and the entire top of the water is covered with green little plants (algae?). There are tons of frogs in the pond. We want to get the pond looking nice and being useful, how do we do it? Are there books, websites, info that someone can email me? Also, are there poisonous frogs in the UK, we have some black and red frogs. thanks

You need to empty and clean the pond, the frogs will survive.
You then need to get a pump to aerate and filter the water if you want to put fish in. Measure the pond and go to a pet shop or aquarium shop, they should be able to advise you on what sort of filter and pump you will need.

As far as I know there are no pisonous frogs in the uk, although I dont know of any red frogs, probably best to catch one and take it to the shop as well..

Scope as much of the algae as you can off the yop of the water - catch it with a garden rake or a kids fishing net. Before you through all the algae away, leave it on the side of your pond for a day or two (not a pretty sight), as this will give any little bugs that came out with the algae to crawl back into the pond again. This will temporarily halt the algae growing back, but keep on top of it.

Leave all the water, plants and other muck in place, as you never know what other creatures might be living in your pond.

If there are too meny plants in the pond, ask your local schools if they want to take some to create their own nature garden.

You can get pond clear to get rid of the blanket weed. It grows because of the sunlight getting to the water. Once thats clear get some aerator plants that float and will stop so much light keeping your pond water clear. A pumps good to to keep air moving through the water and to filter any nasties. This will keep it healthy for fish if you get any. Eventually your pond will find a natural balance and flourish. It will attract newts dragonflys birds and bats.

We don't get poisonous frogs just kermit the frog type. Red and black are cool though.

No poisonous frogs in uk, thats the good news,ponds take a lot of looking after,good filtration, clean it all out, put frogs in bucket.
Your frogs are good at getting rid of slugs that eat flowers and plants.Just in the process of making a pond myself. without looking at your black and red frogs i would'nt know if they were
poisonous or not, sounds like south american tree frogs ??. Hope this helps ,Terry

No, I don't think there are poisonous frogs in the UK, excluding zoos.

For the pond cleaning, there should be various books and websites on that topic. To my knowledge, you should drain it, remove all the plants, line the base with a bin liner and refill.
