*Sigh* How can I answer this briefly? It's not a simple question, and definately not a simple answer.
In short: Many, but not all, of the people in my country (and, I'd imagine, elsewhere now with spreading globalization) stumble along in their brainwashed state, drowning in ignorance, apathy, consumerism, materialism, and the need for instant gratification. They are either so "asleep" that they don't even realize their condition...or they do realize it, but the alternative -- introspection, education, activism, empathy, independent thought, involvement, etc -- is too frightening and/or burdensome, and so they'd rather just pretend that it's all OK the way it is. All they care about is eating their McDonald's and watching American Idol on the new TV they just bought from Wal-Mart. And, of course, the fact that the corporate, mainstream media is not only censored, but is nothing more than sensationalist, ratings-driven(aka profit-driven) garbage doesn't help either.
It's like that line from a song by NOFX: "You'd rather follow the school into the net, because swimming alone at sea isn't the kind of freedom you actually want!"
Lastly, don't assume all Americans are like this. If you do, your worldview will as ignorant and narrow as those you criticize.

bcos their country is so big and not many of them have the need to leave the country. So, they've mostly not seen the world, hence they've "such a narrow view of the world". Believe me, they still think some people in the East live on trees, altho we may be living in a lst world country

Why do you have such a narrow view of Americans?
What makes you think that we have this view of the world? Do you have proof? Why don't you keep that hole in your face shut until you know the FACTS.

So much famine and starvation in the world and not enough resources to help. We have celebrates that make millions and don't give money to help out.(but they adopt a few children and it makes them a saint) Governments that no one can trust. Diseases continue to spread, but medications do not. People have lost all morals, everyone is living for themselves, everyone has a dysfunctional family, money and power is all anyone cares about, athletes make millions and school teachers make nothing,we have killed off thousands of animals, we have destroyed our oceans and our skies,we can get cancer from anything, we can't trust where our food comes from our how it is made, the womb is no longer the safest place to be,children are abused, murders continue to escalate, and the wars get worse every year. Need I go on?

lack of exposure. usa is a very isolated country. the people usually dont travel. the news only reports about usa. it is difficult to find information about other countries. their media is highly censored, not by the govt but by the american conservative culture.
