Theres a book on it ( if you live in the UK) look in WHSmiths's or Waterstones ( this link has the books about free masons http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/202-3040139-8754215 ) -...I don't know what it's called but I'm sure you'd find a book with some interest to inform you and answer your question ( maybe try looking online to see if you can find any, if you're in the US look on amazon. I have no idea of American book stores, sorry!), really I can't say because I'm not in it and from the outside you'd never know if it's good or bad, you'd be better asking someone who used to be a member or still is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_masons <<< clues you up a bit!
from this website I found out:
"Generally to be a regular Freemason, one must:
* Be a man who comes of his own free will. Traditionally Freemasons do not actively recruit new members
* Believe in a Supreme Being
* Be at least the minimum age (18–25 years depending on the jurisdiction, but commonly 21)
* Be of sound mind, body and of good morals, and of good repute
* Be free (or "born free", i.e. not born a slave or bondsman)
* Have one or two references from current Masons (depending on jurisdiction)"
Personally, I believe people should be themselves and never have to bow down to anyone apart from a high being, the person they believe in ( God ) Secret societies seem like trouble...you never know the full extent of a secret and could be involved in something sinister no matter what the society is...whether its the free masons or whatever.
I think he may want status and importance in life thats why, he wants to be respected an honoured. He needs a hobby...instead of replacing his time with that (a hobby he's good at- so he feels important for being good at it.)

As much of good all of u think there are in Freemasons..being a secret society involves other 'stuff' whch is why it is a secret. We are human and we will not understand till we experience. So, if ur husband must join let him. But you should know, with the good there is a possibility of bad.

Good Idea... Freemasonry teaches how to be man of good morals, tolerance, and brotherhood. As a wife of a Mason, be prepared to spend many evenings alone if he becomes very active. Like anything in this world, the more you put into it the more rewarding it becomes......

I think you Husband has done his research and discover that ,by joining Freemasons he'll become one of the most respectable citizens ( An Elite Group ) that respect and conform to the moral laws of society ,that, they are men of charity and good works who strive to support those less fortunate than themselves both inside and outside the order.
You husband has decided to join " the world's oldest and largest fraternity dating back at least to the Middle Ages."

I wouldn't worry about it. The Freemasons are pretty harmless these days. It's been quite a while since they had any meaningful role in most countries. Now it's mainly just a distraction for middle aged men.

Why? What is his motivation? Talk to him, if you think he is honorable and everything is on the up and up then fine. If greed or power is his muse then you should question it unless that is your philosophy as well. You reap what you sow or so I'm told.

Cults are never a good idea. If there is too much secrecy there is trouble.
