there are several reasons which might cause this behaviour,
faulty hardware (harddisk, RAM) or (which is more likely) some malware or virus, do a virus scan, best would be to burn the most recent version of norton on a cd and boot with it and perform the check, if u don't have norton try an alternative, also run trend online virus scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
moreover get some spyware remover like spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/ and adaware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ run those and remove any threats they detect, with spybot u can also easily tweak ur setting on what should be automatically start when windows starts, talking things out of there which u do not immediatly need will speed up the start up, if u have many things in ur task bar on the right site next to the clock when u computer starts, that makes things slow, also delete temporary internet files from internet options u can do this, if still there is no improvement then u can always reinstall if then with a fresh reinstall u still have the problem then it could be hardware related... also i have to say windows sucks and linux would be a much more efficient approach, try ubuntu, works very easy and easy to install also dual install is possible www.ubuntu.com or just a live cd, meaning u boot from cd and have a virtual desktop, doesn't do anything to ur windwos or files system, just to have a look at it, good luck :D

hi
first of all what is your configuration
if it is ok then do some steps it will again work fast
1) start-run-(type)msconfig-in that go in start up and remove all unwanted items which are starting when computer starts
2) remove all items which are extra dfrom start menu which appears above programs in start menu by rightclick and delete
3) remove all start items again from start-programs-startup
4) go in mycomputer properties-advance-performance click on settings-advance-virtual settings and specify 1500 in minimum and 2000 in maximum it will increase the cache memory
and after doing all these stuff restart the system and yes always keep the desktop in classic rather then windows xp desktop you can do this by rightclick on pdesktop-properties-and in themes change it to windows classic and please there should ne no wall paper

You pc must be having a virus or a trogon or a spyware or your RAM is being decreased. You should install a antivirus program such as Norton Antivirus or call a engineer to re-install your windows or can do it yourself.

Try uninstalling some programs that you rarely use. You probably need to decrease the number of programs that are running at startup. To do this, go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and remove any programs that you don't need to run when your computer first comes on.
