Be very, very very slow to use less fuel. If extended downhills are available in a standard stick, shut off engine & coast downhill. When 'accelerating', accelerate very very very slowly & on extended journeys, use automatic cruise control. Once 'up to speed', 'set' & do not ever 'punch' accellerator. In 1975 I drove a 4 cylinder MG Midget through Switzerland from Germany to Italy & France. The fuel was $5.oo(US) per LITER! I kept two 5ltr cans in the trunk & coasted DOWN the mountains with engine off and gradually climbed with conscientieous effort to conserve fuel. The overall average scampering around the German Autobahns was typically 15-20 miles per GALLON but on this trip, due to the extreme prices in Switzerland & Italy without US Sponsored 'rations', I was able to sqweeze 52 miles per gallon!!

Drive in as high a gear as you can to be safe with other road users, put it in neutral and coast when there is a downhill.
if you get to the point where the car is spluttering, you may get a few more yards by steering sharp left and then right to get the last bit out of the tank.
You need to be aware that there is usually a lot of rubbish at the bottom of the tank which may get sucked up and into the engine causing damage.
Never wait for the car to run dry

The first thing you would NOT do is switch off the engine whilst you are still moving! (As this can affect brakes and steering.)
It's all about revs at that point, the lower the revs, the less petrol u use, so if yr on a hill, drop into neutral and coast, if you are on a level road, get into as high a gear as possible and keep yr revs down, and if your going up a hill, then consider, rolling back as there may be a petrol station behind you!!!
Hope you've not just ran out!!

Actually driving slower because you use less fuel. When you speed it takes more gas to move the car.
I would have put gas in the car prior to leaving.

drive at a constant speed. It doesn't really matter to drive really slow or a bit faster, as long as you maintain speed and dont accelerate all the time.
