I am filming a documentary about prostitution in America, and would like the public opinion on why prostitutes become what they are. Please leave your two cents!

Many of them are teenage runaways. They meet the wrong people, get addicted to drugs and need the money to feed their habits.

Based on what I have read (interviews, articles) they get into prostitution for the money. Then they start using drugs because it effects their endurance in bed and helps them deal with having sex with men they would generally not want to have sex with. Then they get kind of stuck in this life style, getting "fast and easy" money (not having to work hard and long hours for less money) and they've become addicted to drugs and need to keep making money to afford more drugs.

I think that in order to make a good documentary about it you need to hear it first hand from the prostitutes themselves and hear their stories. They probably have different reasons, I just wrote what I read was a common.

Some just do it for the money, it is a very easy way to make money. There is also a small percentage who actually find the idea of having sex with strangers for money extremely exciting.
I live in Scotland and know several girls who have done this for a short time just to make money to pull themselves out of debt or raise money for college fees etc. It had nothing to do with drugs or exploitation, it was just about raising cash quickly.

Don't forget the ones who are forced. There's plenty of them... forced either by the family or strangers. I've just seen a reportage about a woman who said she was beaten and raped by 10 men and forced to be a prostitute for long years till she could finally escape.

knowing the drug culture, i would have to respectfully disagree with sandi above, about drugs rarely playing a part. addiction is a beast for some.
