Places are referred to in the female because of the old mother earth, mother nature pre-Christian religion. But men put up temples with towers to remind them of the male phallus, towers pointing to the sky, the male sky god. I've heard mountains referred to as male, as in Old Man Mountain.
Cities are subconsciously considered female maybe because they take us in, they open to us, we go in to them, they enfold us, we penetrate them, both pollute and clean them out again.
Countries you know, some call them Madre Patria. But some of you may have heard of The Fatherland, Heimat, old Germany and Austria. So not always.
In between? Erm, nah, I've not heard of anything in between, lest it be the beach or the surface of a cave. Surfaces and boundaries are kind of neutered or neutral.

It has to do with leftover use of gender nouns that came into our language from Germanic, French, and Latin influence. It's also a term of affection to refer to something as a "she", as the connotation of the use of using the fairer sex in reference to an inanimate object implies a gentle affection.

Comunists used to call their land He (Father land)
Easiest person to love and hate is a she be it your Grand mother, mother, sister, GF, Wife and they can take both very positively. But try to play with them they are the worst to be with.
Same thing goes with the land you are living in. That is the reason may be our 4 fathers started referring places as She,

Just a thought- geographical sites are birthplaces to our families and leaders. Humankind comes from a woman's womb. (Yes, with the necessary help from males.) A wonderful tribute to the miracle of childbirth.

I think that's just English language. In spanish, a country is masculine, EL pais. The ocean, the sky, the world, all also masculine in spanish. i guess it's just the language you speak.

anything nurturing, or that provides sustanance or survival is referred to as "she"
our vehicles are referred to as she also because they protect us as a mothers womb does in a way.
