You would have to consider the reason for those shortages... if it's lack of pay, then yes, the salaries would have to increase to meet demand. If shortages occur because of career burnout, perhaps job flexibility with excellent vacation times would help.

This is a concern of many employers everywhere! In my opinion, the best way to ensure a continuity of supply of professionals is to place all the understudies on a contract basis with all the necessary enticements to ensure they will stay with the company and and contribute towards their capacity building. Many unskilled positions today pay more than the executive roles and young people are often drawn away by the lure of big money. I recently saw an advertisement on the internet for a position vacant for a suberban truck driver offering pay of A$918-00 per week plus overtime. A professional man and his wife gave up their executive positions converted a 24 foot long caravan onto a mobile hot dog stand where they positioned themselves at winter sporting fixtures and made more money in one year that both their salaries in 6 years. Little wonder that the imbalance of remuneration leaves the commercial world short of executives. Companies today simply have to recognise that if they wish to hang on to their staff they must offer long term enticements.
