I'm going to school there for a couple of months and I'm curious where some cool places to go are. If your not familiar with Leiden, other places that are near are cool too.

I lived close to Leiden for several years. It is a cool city, I am sure you will enjoy it. The city center is a good place to just hang out, with nice bars along the canals.
Early October they have a big party (not sure which date but I am sure you won't miss it if you are in the area) that you can't miss.
If you are there in the summer, there is a bunch of lakes just North of Leiden (called "De Kaag" or "Kagerplassen".) You can rent sail boats there and sail for a couple of days, hang out on the water.
Amsterdam is only 20 minutes or so by train, and trains leave every 15 minutes, so make sure to check it out. More mellow is the Hague (also about 20 minutes the other way), a pretty cool city with a boring nightlife.

Enjoy!

Well, myllur told you some suggestions already. It all depends on what you like.
Leiden is rather nice because it has all those canals and so on. Nearby you can find the beautiful beack of Noordwijk and some tulip fields in the summer.
The 3rd October is a local holiday with lots of festivities and markets (second hand items mainly).

You'll probably be interested in the 'coffeeshops' around the Nieuwe Beestenmarkt. If you can still be bothered after a visit to one of those, there's plenty of pubs around that area, too, as well as a McDonalds (in case you develop cravings for sugar & fat).

The guys at Central will have all the other info you need.
