I like pklamba231's encyclopedia-like response.

However, Wichita, KS is my hometown and has been for forty years.

Here's my input. Contact me if you need more.

It's the largest city in Kansas.

Employment in the city can be divided into two categories -- those who work for the aircraft industry and those who don't.

There's a military presence in the city with McConnell Air Force Base.

Socially speaking, it's divided into a west-side and an east-side. That's also a physical description as it is divided by the Arkansas River (actually the Little Arkansas River, the Big Arkanasas River, and then the combination of the two).

To get from one side of town to the other is pretty simple as the fastest ways are either east-west via Kellogg or north-south via the Canel Route. To further help getting around fast there's the by-pass which basically encirles the city.

In it's history, it was called the Athens of the Midwest. That's probably true today more than ever. There's a lot of education options present. There used to be mainly three colleges (Wichita State, Friends University, and Kansas Newman College) but now it's Newman University and a whole lot of branch campuses of colleges from the surrounding counties if not the whole state.

While the city still boasts a downtown area, that area is esentially two areas. The true core downtown area which operates on a 8 to 5 time schedule (sorry people, it's 8 to 5 in Kansas, not 9 to 5 as popularized by east coast/west coast philosophies). The other downtown area is Old Town which operates on a more evening and weekend schedule. Otherwise the is built around shopping centers in various areas of the city. There's probably too many Quik Trips and Wal-Marts for most people's taste.

The people are generally genuinely good natured. Hard-core middle of the road sorts. We can't seem to support any kind of semi-pro team (the baseball team is moving away; the hockey team threatens; the soccer team did the same). There's poor areas in the city but not anything like a ghetto. On the other hand, there's also neighborhoods where the captains of industry live. We've got a mix of old neighborhoods and single-entry controlled communities. According to my insurance company after the last hail storm, we also have more the usual number of Saturn cars.

You can get to Wichita by taking the turnpike which passes through Lawrence, Topeka and Emporia to the north and from OKC to the south. There's other highways, but that's the easier route for those who travel here. Four lanes all the way using it that way.
