The names say it all. A laser printer uses a laser to burn images into the paper. A dot matrix printer makes tiny dots of ink to form the images. A inkjet printer use spray ink to make the images and usally requires special paper.

well, if you like to categorize the type of printers, it will be like this:
1. The dot matrix printer: this printer works on the basis that the printing head consist of 9 pins or 24 pins distributed on a matrix of 3X3 or 4X6, so, depending on the letter to be printed, specific pins of this array will be used to form this letter. you can imagine that the 24 pins type is better quality than the 9 pins
2. Laser Printers: these printers are so much like the photocopy machines, the order comes to the printer to print a specific letter (or character of even picture) so, a laser beam will be applied on the paper to give it a statical magnetize it, then the ink will be applied and it will stick only on the static areas. after that the paper enters a revert static process to make the ink stick on the paper (by the way, it is invented by a woman ;)
3. Ink jet printers: It is a spraying process, but very sophisticated, process as the spray will mix colors to get millions colors

The Laser printer - is using a dry process to produce prints and has a LASER unit involved in this print process.
The Dot Matrix - old technology which is using a dot matrix (small matrix of pins on top a ink textile/plastic ribbon) to produce prints. Is an impact process.
The inkjet printer - is a printer which is using a wet process to produce prints using ...ink. the name INKJET is from HP idea of using an inkjet to produce small dots of ink. For instance Epson or Canon are using a different idea to produce small drops/dot of ink. (piezo and bubble).
