Okay, you have approximately 18 weeks until December - which means you have a LOT of time to lose this weight. Its unhealthy to lose more than two pounds a week, but this is ALMOST 40 pounds and you'll probably drop more than that anyway.
All you have to do is count calories. Its the best way to lose weight - don't get sucked into all that carb counting and stuff, its unhealthy and doesn't work as well. Try cutting down the number of calories you eat a day to 2,000 for two or three weeks - if you are not losing as much as you want, try cutting down to 1,500 calories a day - but don't go much lower than that. That's not healthy, and will make your body go into starvation mode - in which you not only don't lose weight, you GAIN it.
On top of this, exercise, but now too drastically. Try walking or jogging a mile or so four or five days a week, and then up to two slowly after a few weeks, and maybe even to three after that.
This is the healthiest and easiest way to lose weight. It also has the best results - you are unlikely to gain the weight you lose back if you do it this way.
Excerising everyday is NOT healthy, and diet pills and anorexia are DEADLY. Don't be dumb, do it the healthy way!
Good luck!

Eat a well balanced diet and exercise daily. Drink lots of water. Don't eat a lot of empty calories like candy, soft drinks, chips etc. Two pounds a week is a safe way to loose. Keep in mind, for example if you weigh 150 pounds it takes 1500 calories a day to maintain your weight, the only way to loose weight is to eat less than 1500 calories or burn off the calories through exercise. You just add a zero to your current weight, and then that's the amount of calories you need to eat to maintain. Simple guide to kind of see where you are. The South Beach Diet is a simple diet to follow and you generally loose 10 to 12 pounds the first two weeks. It's difficult the first couple of days but after that your cravings for carbs subsides and then you start to reintroduce good carbs back into your diet. As with any weight loss plan, consult your doctor and take a multivitamin each day to make sure you are getting all the nutrients you need. Good luck.

I'm not sure about 40 pounds (it depends on your present weight), but this is how I lost 20 pounds ( went from 145 to 125 pounds) in 2 months:
I ate everything. Probably the results will be better if your on a diet (but no sugar, no sodas, and low on salt, homemade, natural food ONLY).
You can take "Fat Burner" pills, Walmart sells them, but I don't know if they are safe.
Now the important part. You have to be in a gym, 1 hour each day, 6 days per week. No less than that. (the 7th day is the recovery day).
First, you stretch well. Doesn't matter how, just stretch your body well.
Then, you go on a treadmill.
If it is the pre-programmed one, then you pick the program that is called something like a "Fat Burn" or the one where you will have to walk up and down periodically, like climbing HILLS, this is the one you need. You set time in it for 1(!) hour. And you set your speed level at 4.0 (You can walk faster if you can). The program will automatically adjust the inclinations levels for you. Do not stop, keep exercising, until 1 hour is over.
If a treadmill is not pre-programmed, then you will have to watch time and alternate: 4 minutes you walk with inclination level 7, then another 4 minutes with inclination level 15 (the highest), and alternate like that every 4 minutes, so your walk will be like up and down, up and down. You start by walking VERY slowly at the speed of 2.5 for the first 5 minutes, then after this starting 5 minutes are over, you speed up to 4.0 of speed and in the same time adjust your inclination level to 7, walk like this for 4 minutes; after these 4 minutes are over, adjust your inclination level to the highest one (usually 15), and walk another 4 minutes; after that go back to 7 for 4 minutes, and then back to 15 for 4 minutes, and alternate like that from 7 to 15 every 4 minutes till 1 hour of that work is over. The last 2 minutes you walk slowly for the cool-off.
Do not stop. The last 20 minutes of the exercise is when the fat actually starts burning, so it is important to complete the whole hour without stopping.
Do stretching again for 5 minutes.
You can lift weights after treadmill, your body is now totally heated up and well prepared for lifting weights; but this is optional, you can just go home and get rest.
You will physically feel the burning of fat under the skin.
Also, another very important thing: breathe right! This is easy; when you walk, 2 steps - inhale, next 2 steps - exhale, and alternate like this.
GOOD LUCK !!

Diet pills are dangerous and they usually backfire on you.
You can build up a tolerance very quickly and then you have to take them to feel like you did before starting them. Otherwise when you stop you become ravishingly hungry.
Do 1/2 hr of aerobics 3x a week and alternate with 1/2 hr of weights on 3 days a week. Cut out deserts except for fruit. Eat lots of veggies. Low fat protein. Plenty of water.
See how you are doing with this before stepping it up to a more structured program.
If you can afford a fitness trainer that is great.
You can really expect results because they work your butt off. Is that what you were hoping for?
Good Luck,
God Bless You, ;-)
