what are the most important things necessary, to you?
how little can you get away with? no physical descriptions? no name? will the character still serve the purpose? will he/she still 'come to life'??

I think the better the story the less you have to know about a character's past, looks, or eventhe small details but no name could be annoying. I think if a character has an inner depth then then they are amazing. When I read a book with a male character i think is this a person i would want to have in my life be it as a friend, lover, husband child father or even enemy. THAT is a good charater

The character is made by the action he makes and by the dialogues he participates in. I think that person's actions and language shows who he is. [Of course, the actions and teh language must be a little more impressive than 'he washed the dishes' and 'Hello, my name is blah blah']. Name could also be unimportant, if the book is written in the first person. Physical description is no need as most of the times it isnt important if the character had brown or black hair..

A character (in novels) should be a believable person. If you are reading the description of a character and relating it or comparing it to someone you know in your own life, then that is a good character.
