Because when you smoke something Mother-Nature made you are exercising Free Will and Christians hate Free Will. Alcohol strips your will away - - - alcohol is the blood of Christ controlling you consuming you - - - you must submit while mostly marijuana makes you think & laugh and Christians want you to only think about Jesus writhering on the Cross dying for your sins and they are not all that big on laughter. Go figure Muslims speak out against alcohol because 'it clouds the mind' and 'mars ones judgement' yet they are o-k about smoking hashish. Actually since the dawn of time Man/Womankind has smoked various herbs for healing purposes, soothing anger, giving one chance to think, for various reasons, a good smoke has always been a friend to civilization. Actually if you do herb be wary of alcohol bashing, use of any substance is a matter of FREE WILL and the ANTI- Marijuana people are all about taking away freedom. The people who hate Marijuana want to see every citizen registered for their sexual preferences, the age for sex bumped up to twenty one or twenty five, they want six year olds to stand in front of strangers peeing in cups, and a whole host of simliar restrictions. They're the sort that use Liberal as a swear word. PS Many of them are Meth Heads - - - another manufactered substance. Why do you think many Beer makers suddenly started offering 'ICE' beer? But I am rambling. Peace.

You ask a serious question, so you deserve a serious answer.
First, the people who've argued that this has anything to do with taxation are completely wrong. Yes, some people DO grow MJ, but it takes a while and is actually pretty expensive to do. So most people wouldn't do it if they could. Furthermore, the government taxes alcohol, but people also make alcoholic products (beers and wines) in their homes all the time, and it's perfectly legal and non-taxable (so long as they don't sell it). So the tax argument is way off the track.
The real reason is because of the intended effect. There are a great many reasons why someone would drink alcohol that have nothing whatsoever to do with getting drunk. However, there is only one reason people smoke MJ, and that's to get a buzz.
Here's an important question for you. Does society have the right to say that people should have their wits about them so they don't represent a danger to other people? If you say, "no," then I guess you'd be in favor of legalizing MJ.
But I say that being a member of society places just as many obligations on a person as rights. When you ingest a drug whose only purpose is to get you wasted, you represent a threat to everyone else around you. Here's a test, if you had to choose, which one would you choose:
Would you rather that the pilot flying your plane had a bottle of beer before takeoff, or that he smoked a joint? See my point?

As people say, the alcohol lobbies have more power. Also, a lot of people traditionally have been allowed to drink. Prohibition didn't work as we can see with alcohol.
However, marijuana affects your motor skills so it is not safe to drive or work when "high". Some think it is fun to drive or drive better when they are "high" but I would stay away from main highways, residential neighborhoods or drive too fast if you are going to risk that. Drive around in the woods at night if you must be an idiot.
Also, most people don't *really* care what people do in their homes as far as marijuana use. Not many cops busting down doors because they smell a joint. However, most people don't really smoke or eat cannabis, so they don't push for it.

I believe because there is no definitive test that if ya smoked it 20 minutes ago or 20 hours. Sad but true. I have never seen anyone come into the hospital for injury or illness relating to ONLY marijuana usage. Of course I can Imagine nothing ever getting done =)
Because I got high
Because I got high
Because I got high
'Afroman'
FACT: Alcohol is a drug .
FACT: People on certain types of drugs are more violent than SOME people drinking liquor but not all.
FACT: I have never had a person admitted to the hospital for smoking too much weed. (At least not by itself.)
FACT: I have had people come in nearly drinking themselves to death.

Because during the Nixon administration,he came up with the narcotics classification laws.Marijuana, being a mind altering drug, was placed on the list.Marijuana was not illegal or legal before the classification laws came into play.
I do not smoke pot,but I am more against DRUNKS then I am against someone who smokes a little weed. There are so many deaths b/c of alcohol--DWI deaths and alcohol poisoning, innocent victims beat to to death at the hands of those being drunk.
**********
And as far as taxation---well lets see Cigarettes are the highest taxed thing purchased. And for what--us walking out of the tobacco shop only to get hit by a drunk driver.Hello there, legalize marijuana and classify alcohol as a drug for prescription purchase.

First and fore most I have to agree with you. How many high husbands beat their wives? zero zilch nada!!! And there would be far less bar fights!!! but it is because the government can't tax marijuana!! There are a few places in the us that have made it legal. Las Vegas is one and Denver. I am a Psyc. Major and did a paper on the Denver and they made some pretty good points on why it should be legal. It was in the Rock Hill Herald in the fall. You could probably find it. http://www.dea.gov/agency/staffing.htm

Alcohol is served at many of the law-makers political functions, and used by them at home, golf course etc. To many influential people use alcohol and not enough use the weed.
Many also believe that it's the first step on the path to harder drugs therefore more crime will be committed to acquire them. It won't be legalized even if it's made taxable. they even shut down marijuana used for medical purposes.

Because the government never saw the tax revenue POTential of marijuana (something they now kick their asses for). Well, after decades of making it illegal, it's too late to turn around and lose face on the fact big $$$$ could've been made from it.
Many politicians fear legalizing pot willl lessen it's illegal $$$$ sales revenues--such that is quietly being sent into their bank accounts.
So as long as it's making it's huge $$$$ profits as it stands today, marijuana will never become mainstream sold as a legal product.

Simple, the government can't tax it, so they don't want us to have it. And we haven't made a big enough problem about it yet, like we did with the alcohol prohibition in the 1920's. That caused major riots for a long period of time, no one has done that about some pot YET. If enough people want it legalized, we can make it happen.

Because the government can tax alcohol and not too many ppl can make it. When marijuana can be grown by almost anyone, and the government can't control that so the make marijuana illegal.
