Its a difficult job to maintain the bush. I prefer it clean, looking straight at the top. For this, I use a clothes line as a marker, tie it at 2 points as a guide line, and chop off anything growing beyond it. The sides too, taking care not to close crop near roots.
That is for the bush in the garden & fence.

My bush... I like it clean looking. I read about clipping it in a straight line, but I like it clipped down to the roots. It provides easier access to the door.
My hedges... Depending on the size, I clip the larger ones to shape. I alternate shapes such as circle, box, and semicircle. If they are flowering bushes, be careful when you trim them, you just might clip off the flower buds. Eyeball them from afar to see how you want them to look. Never let them grow too large near a house for safety.
