a column can be opiniated, NOT an article. never an article as then it is biased. articles must just be factual (from both sides of a story) answering the key Qs: Why, When, Where, Who, What, How?

A column is an established weekly (or however often depending on the publication) thing that the writer has control over. It is written by the same author every week. This one is the one where the writer can be opinionated. An article is one time only.

Article is news. Factual information so to speak.

A Column is an opinion or at least a very personal view. Often by the same person and on a regular basis.

A column is expected to be the writers opinion. That is why it is also called an op/ed piece -- opinion/editorial. Articles are to be objective and just report the news.
