A lot depends of your budget and what things you enjoy doing. If You are on a family holiday, Switzerland with its many lakes, ice palace even in summertime, the Bernese Oberland, Interlakken in the Italian canton, and of course--the Emmental area with its lovely cheese and chocolate--kids flip over switzerland because to them it is a real live fairy land. Make sure you take to "Miniature Suizze" Switzerland depicted in a miniature playland with running trains and riverboats etc built in miniatures. In other words, Switzerland is best for families and adventurous adults.

Try to go somewhere around the Med it's still very warm in October but not too hot especially if you want to travel around, even the sea is still very warm if you like to swim.
