From the answers I've seen so far - some people think its ok that they get paid so much - some think its a complete farce - seems to be 50-50 at the moment.
Why don't Doctors/Surgeons/Nurses/Police/Firefighters/Coastguard/Soldiers get paid the same money - these people either save lives or put their lives at risk on a daily basis. Footballers kick an inflated pigs bladder around a park once a week and get to live a life of luxury when there are nurses struggling to pay their mortgage and soldiers being left with no support when they come home with post traumatic stress from the attrocoties they encounter during war.
I don't want this to turn into a war related thread lets just have some more realisitc answer please - not just "there is demand for it".
There's demand for lives to be saved EVERYDAY - not just once a week but Doctors dont get £50,000 per week like some footballers...

I can't believe people are defending the footballers!
All they do is train regularly and kick a ball about, and they get millions to do so. A total waste of money. I get paid enough to live, wit a few luxuries, and I do something that actually has a use in the world. I'm an aircraft engineer. A footballer doesn't actually change anything in the world. They'll be forgotten in the grand sceme of things.
The jobs that should get lots of money, are the doctors, nurses, civil engineers, emergency services etc, not a guy who kicks a ball about in front of a camera for entertainment.

yes footballers do get an obscene amount of money but so do actors and politicians some say its because morons pay to watch them well then everyone in the world must be a moron
because we all watch TV and films the news or listen to the radio or read a book that someone has written all of which is in hope of making them richer than Jo bloggs down the road and lets face it they all give and do something for charities what do you or i do really and besides if your boss came up to you and said OK you have worked so hard this year i am going to raise your income to 10,000 pound a week your not gonna turn it down and your not gonna solve the people who are staving you cant help these people any more than you me or the footballers or any other person already dose all your doing is easing the problem so please stop whining about footballers and look at the whole picture.

Cause it's a job just like anything else you can get paid for using their talent and people are willing to pay.Personally they would have to pay me big bucks to get tackled by a 200+ pound bruiser. But what about what the promoters and owners are making off of the game when the player is taking the risk of getting his bones broke. Players should get their fair share!
People make choices whether to pay to go to a football game or give to charity. Some people do both.A lot of pro football players do give to charity though by appearances at events, etc. Lighten up, it's entertainment and mindless just like the WWE pro wrestling is.

That's a Great Question - Good example - Glasgow Rangers - how can these dummies be worth £20k a week ...and not be able to beat pub teams like Dundee Utd. It must be some sort of Tax dodge. And players like Rooney who are on Telephone numbers - It is Obscene !!

They have a rare talent that makes the club money, and the amount depends on what league they are in, also they are presented in the media and tv as some kind of gods, but when i watched the world cup i was dissapointed with all of them. Yes in a fair world money should be shared out from the huge amount of high earners in every occupation.

its is about supply and demand as others have pointed out, but it also reflects the obscene amounts of money swilling about in the game, much of which comes from clothing, TV & sponsirship.
The actual amount of money coming through the turnstiles (form people going to the game) in premier league games is less than other sources of money.
It reflects the attitude of the players , managers and ownders of the club that they believe its important to have superstrars, its a form of machismo that you have well known players on high salaries, its about boasting that 'we' sepnt '£n' on player X,Y & Z. its a bit like being back in primary school , my dads got a bigger / better whatever

When TV are willing to pay so much money for the rights to screen matches and sponsors so much money to have their name on a shirt the players should continue to receive high wages rather than the rich chairmen getting righer. It is then down to their conscience if they want to use their wealth to do some good.

Unfortunatly its supply and demand.
Their skills are in demand to keep half the population entertained and football is big business with all the television rights, merchandising etc!
So best and most entertaining sportsman get paid the most. Not bad for 2 hours a day and a couple of games of footy a week!!

Because many, many more people feel passionately about supporting thier football clubs than feel passionately about donating thier money to charity. Simple, right?

Yes and the same goes for our politicians, movie stars, singers.
Footballers get so much money because you pay for seeing them to play football.
