Well, Lynn, as you doubtless know by now, I love ice hockey! As for field hockey... not so much.

Real (ice) hockey is a North American and European game which features speed, skill and physicality whilst skating on an ice surface. Girlie (field) hockey is more commonly seen in Western prep schools and countries like India and Pakistan, who have national teams. It involves some speed and skill but zero physicality. As someone has already suggested, it resembles football (soccer) with sticks more than its distant, cold weather relation.

Ice hockey is very definitely far more violent, as there are boards and glass partitions encircling the skating rink and the players go out of their way to hit (check) the opposition. They also use larger and heavier sticks than the field equivalent and fire frozen rubber pucks at high velocity. Players are often seriously hurt playing real hockey. I've no clue as to the injury stats for field hockey but I've heard that Buffy recently bruised her pinkie finger whilst Tiffany complained of a hangnail.

Real (ice) hockey is very definitely poetry in motion. It is, in fact, the greatest game on earth! It is fast-paced, intense, hard-hitting and exciting. Wonderful as it is to watch on television, nothing compares to taking in a hockey game in person. Fantastic!

Field hockey is... erm... well, it's technically in motion, I guess.

As for which is easier to manoeuvre, I would think the ball is easier than the puck. I've played street hockey (essentially ice hockey minus the ice; NOT field hockey) many times in my younger life and found I could easily control the ball on my stick. A puck, meanwhile, has a tendency to skip and bounce over stick blades, particularly if the ice surface isn't of the best quality (aka too choppy).

Real hockey players can fire the puck in excess of 100 mph. I believe another answerer has already quoted the maximum velocity of girlie, er, field hockey balls. And while said answerer may have worn special equipment for his field hockey experiences, the world version as seen at the Olympics involves minimal equipment (no helmets, gloves or padding beyond that of your average soccer player). Real (ice) hockey requires quite a lot of equipment and padding, beginning with skates, knee and shin pads, thigh pads, athletic supporters, abdominal padding, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, helmets (often with visors or full cage masks) -- and goaltenders wear even more protection -- as well as their unique uniforms, which are awesome!

My favourite hockey team is the Buffalo Sabres! Always has been and always shall be! I've loved that team since its inception (they debuted in 1970 when I was a very wee lad) and watched them play in person many times, including when they visited Washington to play the Caps, last March. I have no favourite field hockey team. I mean, honestly...

The top-ranked nations for ice hockey are: Canada (like, they invented the game, eh?), USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, amongst others. The top field hockey nations are: India, Pakistan, Australia, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Argentina and Korea (and yes, I had to bloody research this, lol).

Thank you for (finally) asking a hockey question, but could we just stick to REAL hockey next time, please? :)

Yay! I can so answer this question as I play both ice hockey and field hockey. Ice hockey is definatly more dangerous than field hockey, but there are a lt of injuries that come from both of the sports. And from the point you look vat field hockey and ice hockey, both sports are a sort of poetry in motion.

A field hockey ball on grass is a lot harder to manoevere than an ice hockey puck. But an ice hockey puck moves just as fast as a field hockey ball on turf. The fastest ice hockey shot I've heard of was in the 90 mph speed. An average field hockey shot on grass could anywhere from 30-60 mph. While an Olympic player would shoot somewhere in the 70's.

An ice hockey player has to wear a lot mopre than the average field hockey player. An ice hockey player wears shin pads, protective pants, a cup (if your a guy), chest pads, elbow pads, gloves, a mouthguard, and a helmet. While a field hockey player wears shin guards, a mouth guard, or occasionally eye goggles.

My favorite ice hockey team would have to be the Boston Bruins or the Edmonton Oilers, it's so hard for me to decide. And my favoirte field hockey team would have to be the Austrialia national Olympic team.

The top ranked nations fro field hockey are Austrialia, Argintina, and the Netharlands. The top ranked ice hockey teams are Canada, Sweden, and the Netharlands.

Oh, and some other differences between ice hockey and field hockey are:

In ice hockey you can use both sides of your stick, while in field hockey you can't.
In ice hockey you can kick the puck with your foot, while in field hockey it's a penalty if you touch the ball with your foot.
There is checking in certain levels of ie hockey, unlike field hockey where there is no checking at all.
There are different penalties when it comes to things you cannot do one the ice and on land.

Hope that helped! Please vote for me as best answer! Thanks

For one thing, ice hockey players have to wear all kinds of protective equipment, where as field hockey players do not. This is because if a player falls on the ice, it is much more dangerous than falling on the ground. Also, the contact rules are slightly different between the two forms of the sport.

Here we go:

Field hockey is more similar to soccer. 11 players on each team (compared to 6 for hockey), very similar rules to soccer (out of bounds, corner kicks and offsides can all be seen in field hockey), and has the same sort of pace of a soccer game.

Ice hockey is more violent only because hitting is allowed. Good hockey, both field and ice is like poetry in motion, if you understand the game you are watching. If you don't it looks like chaos.

To me, controlling a field hockey ball is way easier, but it is all in the player. Field hockey sticks are shorter with a smaller blade, but the ball can be unpredictable as a puck on ice. The highest speed a puck can reach is around 100 mph, and a field hockey ball....I would say in the 80-90 mph range. I tell you one thing, when I was playing goal in field hockey, a fast enough shot would make the balls we used whistle through the air.....and you knew it would hurt to save it.

An average ice hockey player wears what a field hockey goalie wears without the leg pads. When I played field hockey goalie I wore an ice hockey helmet, chest protector, pants and shoulder pads. An average field hockey player wears shin guards as their only protection.

Favorite ice hockey team....the Calgary Flames. Don't really follow field hockey outside of when I played.

Nations, without looking up I would say ice hockey is Canada, Russia, Sweden, Czech and US. Field Hockey, India, Pakistan, possibly England and maybe the Caribbean.

Just to clarify, in North America (US/Canada), field hockey is seen as a girls sport. In the rest of the world, it is a mens sport. Those who joke about the little skirts and the game haven't seen a real mens game in action and would probably not last 2 minutes in a field hockey game.

well field hockey is a womn version of real hockey. ice hockey is more violent and action oriented thus u need more pads. field hockey u need i guess gloves a skirt and shinguards where in ice hockey ur nearly covered head to toe in protective gear. i dunno how fast a field hockey ball goes but prolly maxes around 60. pucks can get upwards of 100 in the right circumstances(one-timers,puck already in motion, charging into the shot). plus a puck hurts alot more. does field hockey even have pro teams? For the NHL u gotta go Philadelphia Flyers adn Colorado Avalanche and for countries its very balanced with canada leading and then all of russia and it's soviet friends, the U.S. and some european countries.
