Diabetics have trouble healing wounds. Or it may have become infected at some point. He should probably go to a doctor, because if the situation continues to get worse, the leg might have to be amputated.

Hi, it is possible that your dad could have delayed healing from certain immunological deficiencies, but the most common cause in an overweight person who doesnt heal well is diabetes, and probably a moderate stage of it.
In diabetes, two of the main complications that can occur is diabetic neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease. Thus, when you get hurt/cut, due to the impairment in the nerves and thus the neural conducting pathways, you would not be able to feel any pain and thus would not be alerted to the injury. Thus, it might lead on to secondary infection and not be detected till it becomes visually obvious.
In your dad's case, it seems more likely there is a heavier contributary factor of peripheral vascular disease, where the blood vessels are affected and will not be able to deliver as much nutrients and oxygen to the injured area. Thus healing is compromised. Classically the description of not healing in a few weeks does lead to the suspicion of diabetes mellitus, and it would be prudent to get your dad's blood glucose level checked at a nearby hospital facility.
Hope your dad gets better! :D

It could very likely be infected also. A simple urgent care visit to the doc and they can at least do a culture and find out if it is infected and give him oral antibiotics if so. It doesn't necessarily need to be oozing pus to be infected.

First he should try zinc oxide, my favorite healing ointment. If after a few days, this doesn't work, he should see a doctor. Difficulty in healing could mean diabetes.

he might not be releasing prothrombin or he might have a thrombin problem. perhaps he is anemic. its probably nothing though. just clean the wound then then put antibiotics and let it air out as often as possible. i doubt he has a clotting problem like the ones i stated above.

he could have diabetes, because that stops cuts from healing. even if he doesnt, he needs to go to the doctor, it could be a rare/nasty/deadly (after a long period of time obviously) infection
