It has to do with the anesthesia used. Make sure you tell your doctor.

It's OK. It's so hard not to eat when you're starving, huh?! The reason why you're not supposed to eat is because people often respond to anesthesia with vomitting. They don't know if you'll need general anesthesia (when they put you to sleep) or not. Your spinal might not work, so it's always an option. Even when you don't have general anesthesia, women sometimes experience nausea and vomitting, so they don't want you throwing up all over the place in the OR while they're trying to suture you up. A good anesthesiologist will give you an anti-emetic (no puke drug) like Zofran, so you won't get sick to your stomach. Don't worry about the cheese. It should be long gone before your c-section! I ate a big plumb before mine ...naughty, I know. I didn't puke though, luckily. Really, if you don't eat anything for four hours ahead of time, you'll be fine. Hospital policies go a little overboard sometimes....

Have a GREAT delivery!!!

Yes, a chance you'll vomit and aspirate your food, get pneumonia, etc. That's why they tell you not to eat before surgery. Not to mention, throwing up isn't that much fun, especially with a fresh incision and staples in your belly.

No more food tonight! It's probably ok if you go the next 8 hrs without anything else but be sure to tell the anesthesiologist and your OB in the morning. Yes, they can give you some anti-nausea drugs but it's better to have an empty belly

I thought the doctors just wanted enough room to work with.

gas... the want you to pass the gas before you eat, so that you won't get constipated ... and be in horrible pain plus your staples or stitches might come undone... believe me it's painful enough without having to go through that... I hope you get gas from cheesecake....
