You should never buy a pet when there are MILLIONS of cats & dogs being euthanized every year. You should adopt from your local shelter.
Why not a cat or dog? If you live somewhere they aren't allowed, then I can understand that.
If they just don't float your boat, then go to your local chain pet supply store and look on their bulliten board(or vet office, or even local newspaper or on-line pet classifieds) for people that have small exotic pets up for adoption or sale; that way would be much cheaper than going to a pet store and flat out buying an exotic, and would also be saving the pet's life rather than creating more of a demand for breeding captive-born or catching wild born exotics.
Let's see, small/cute/furry........... there are:
1. sugar gliders
2. hedgehogs
3. rabbits
4. rats (they can be VERY tame, & you wouldn't believe
how intelligent they are)
5. palm squirrels
6. guinea pigs(not my personal faves)
7. chinchillas
Just some ideas. Please do your research before you commit to care for any exotic pet.
Have fun, and good luck!!!

I think the reason that dogs and cats are the most popular animals is that they are the cutest, most responsive, and can be the most affectionate.
Most other small animals are hard to keep in a house (pigs are an example), and tend to bite, or just are not people-oriented enough to be affectionate.
I would strongly suggest that you consider a kitten. The best kittens are healthy and very responsive and trusting. The level of trust they display when they meet you is very important--it means that their initial experiences with humans have been positive. If the kitten seems afraid of you, it's not the best choice.
Go to the SPCA and choose your pet on the basis of personality--the freindly, trusting animal that wants to play with you.

Our neighbor has a ferret. They are cute, small and furry. They are in your price range. The food is not expensive or exotic, and they just need a cage and some objects to break up the monotony. There is even a magazine that is dedicated to them. They seem to be affectionate. My nine year old daughter loved holding one. Many pet stores have them. The one closest to us has five or six in a cage. They are quite active.

I used to have a pet rat that I loved dearly. He was very sweet and liked to be around people. They are very clean animals and cost under $100 to get everything for. The sad thing is that they have very short life spans, about 2-3 years so it's tough when they start getting old.

Easy! A pet rat!!!
Not a sewer rat. You want the domestic kind, called a fancy rat.
I used to have a friend who raised them, so I got mine for free. But the pet stores sell them for under $30.00.
Their personalities are like playful kittens and they stay that way, even after they grow up. I used to have one that would ride arund on my shoulder.
They are soooo adorable with their little velvety ears and teeny little paws that look like human hands with long fingers.
I have had 3 rats in my life. They were all 3 very affectionalte, but I really bonded with the first one, because she was theonly rat I had. The other two I got at the same time (from same litter). They bonded more with each other than with me. So, get one, and devote your love to that one.
They are clean animals, but need your help to keep their cage fresh.
The only drawback to having pet rats is that they have a very short lifespan. The way I dealt with that is I told myself that if I got attached to rats as pets, I would start at the top of the alphabet with names and work my way to z.
My first rat was Addy.
My 2nd and 3rd rats were Beatrix and Chloe.
Then I started adopting stray cats and there went the neighborhood. :-P
But, I highly recommend giving your heart to a ratty. You won't be disappointed.

A hamster, they are fun to watch, not to big, and they come in all colors so you can pick which you think is cutest. They are active you can watch them roll around in a thier ball, or spin on tier wheel. They are low cost. You must pay attention to your hamster though and show ove for it, because if you don't it will bite and be more wild.
