It's my nephew's birthday- last year I got him a Red Flyer Wagon and it was a big hit. What are the other must-have (classic, timeless) gifts for toddlers? What toy has endured over time in your home?

Are legos safe for 2 year olds?

Warren D- Shouldn't girls be given toys that encourage building and operating things? ;) I'm an engineer, so of course I think so!

Actually, you can't do better than LEGO toys if you want to give your nephew a building toy. LEGO makes a wide range of toys for tots-- and people like me who never quite grew up. LEGO specifically makes DUPLO toys for toddlers. Check out the first link below for some product ideas from LEGO Shop. One of the great things about LEGO toys is that your nephew will be able to incorporate his DUPLO toys with traditional LEGO pieces as he grows older because they're designed to snap together. I know because I have both toys and I've mixed the two when building with my four-year old nephew.

Some other toys you should consider, however, are trains. My nephew loves Thomas & Friends and he has the complete LEGO DUPLO set, as well as many pieces from the wooden railway sets, which he's owned since he was two. BRIO and Eichhorn also make great train sets and the tracks are interchangeable with Thomas & Friends wooden railway systems.

Other toys you might consider include plastic Bob the Builder toys, wooden Jay Jay the Jet Plane toys, dinosaur replicas from Safari, Bullyland, Papo or Schleich or plush reptiles from Wild Republic, which makes uncommon stuffed animals, too. I've added links to various sites below.

I truly hope you find something your nephew will like. I marvel at my nephew when I watch him play with his toys and I share his passion for building with LEGO. Cheers and Happy Birthday to your nephew!

I would suggest a pull-type toy train. They make some very nice wooden ones that come with a track that the child can assemble.

My grandson has one. Ideally, a toy for a toddler would harness the child's energy and use no batteries. In other words, the train is pulled by the child. Boys should be given toys that encourage building and operating things.

I would avoid toy guns for this age group, though I don't see anything wrong with giving them to older boys.

Another excellent toy is Legos, which come in a special size for toddlers.

I would not recommend lego' s for a 2 year old. The reason being is because the lego pieces are way to small. At this age, some children might know not to put small things in their mouth, but others might not. If you want some type of building tool similar to lego, I suggest kid knex. Kid knex are sold at toys are us and the youngest age range I believe is 2. If you don't like those you can also think about mega blocks. These are big enough blocks that if put in the mouth, he wouldn't be able to swollow. They come in different colors for boys and girls. They also come in different piece counts. Hope this helped

Itty Bitty Baby Toys
Itty bitty baby toys are perfect for your little one. These toys are snuggly soft and measure only about 3 inches, made just for little ones.

A toy truck is nice but make sure it doesn't have a lot of small pieces.

A brown teddy bear, of course. What 2-year-old doesn't have one? Then when he gets potty-trained, you can reward him with a train! Get it? Train and train? (They're the same word with a different meaning.)

Toy trucks and cars, and no legos are not safe they could try to eat them and then choke.
