every day...so I'm worried about doing something bad. The last time I was so constipated that enema did't even work( ummmppff)
so I had to use glycerine laxative(it didn't say ask a doctor if you are pregnant , so I thought it might be safe).I know what I have to do in order not to get constipated again, but the problem is I have a very bad morning sickness, I can't stand anything other than some special foods like milk. I tried some chilly beans and they helped, but I don't know how long I will be able to eat them.
My question is is enema safe in case I get constipated again? What about the laxative I used?...What should I do when I get constipated again?

This is something you need to discuss wtih your doctor. Generally stool softeners, lots of fluid and fiber are the best ways to deal with constipation.

The glycerine suppositories and a small Fleet enema can be used on occasion if you are uncomfortable but you might want to run it by your doctor first as enemas can sometimes stimulate contractions. Are you taking prenatals with iron? They can be constipating too.

What are you taking for the morning sickness and are you almost past the first trimester? You may be constipated because you aren't moving around and are getting dehydrated from vomiting. If that's the case, the constipation may resolve when the nausea does.

Enema During Pregnancy

An enema is safer than laxitatives, because your baby will be drinking that laxitative to. Most enemas have less ingredents than than laxitatives. Check the label; I have one from Wallgreens that has phosphate and sodium compounds. It seems to be mostly pure water though. If you only use water than that is probably safer. You can lie on your side, force the water in and then procede to the toliet. Try Fig Newtons, they help me. I have a major problem with constipation so I have an idea of how you feel.

When I was in the hosptial a nurse told me that the body needs water to keep the stools lose, but the abdomen has the lowest priority on your water supply. You need water to sweat, for your baby, and for other processes. So sometimes you can short change your body of the water that it needs. I make sure that I drink a lot of water. The human body is mostly water so as long as you don't try chugging a huge bottle at once, you can drink as much water as you want. If you drink too much then it is going to be easily removed. When your urine starts running clear then you could be approaching this point. If your urine is not running clear, then you NEED more water.

Always, always, consult with your doctor first, before you try anything. Ask him which is safer; Laxative, enema's, or Docusate Sodium (stool softener). I take that to help with my constipation. It dosn't cost much and is avaible without a perscription.

Actually, no, it's not OK to use while pregnant. Enemas stimulate labor (contractions), so don't use anymore. If you have bad morning sickness, you can try using Emetrol. It's over-the-counter and it's completely safe to use during pregnancy. I chugged it when I had morning sickness and it really helped. I'm surprised that milk and chili beans are helping you - typically, those would make you far sicker. If you want to avoid becoming constipated, you need to drink a lot of water and eat plenty of fiber (35 grams a day) I realize it's hard to eat, so perhaps you can try drinking one of those new clear fiber drinks (Benefiber?) Also, there are great lollipops made for morning sickness called "Preggo Pops" Those will help, too. Back to your question again: No, enemas are not safe during pregnancy.

I hope you feel better!!!

First of all I doubt its abuse if a Mother administered an enema or a suppository to her daughter. Yes its vital to know when her last BM was. She may have very hard stool which could even cause bleeding as it is pushed out, so ask her if she feels full in her rectum and if it seems hard. You can even find mini-enemas that have a stool softener in them that are designed for rectal use, the area where the problem is. You can give her that, then follow it up with a "bulb syringe" enema, about 8 ounces of warm water with a bit of salt added to it. I am a trained colon therapist (give colonic irrigations). I would also call your family doctor of course if this continues. Thank you.

While your best and only advice you should listen to should come from a doctor, I personally do not see any problem with using something like an enema or a light laxative. If anything, it prevents you from straining your muscles, which is a good thing when you are pregnant. But, again, please call a doctor. This is the kind of advice they'd likely give you even over the phone.

Good luck !
