I assume ignorant people are the way they are out of laziness or lack of motivation for academia...mind you, we have to differentiate these arrogant ignorant people from those who are have just not come across certain information yet they are willing and open to be schooled on new ideas or [to them] new information.

The arrogant ignorant will be fierce about demontstrating their lacking because the opportunity to get on a soapbox fell into their lap and they will grandstand for as long as they possibly could.

they know they're digging themselves deeper in a hole of ignorance, and all they can think of is to claw their way out feverishly digging themselves a hole deeper still (thus the fierceness).

1. Ignorance can be bliss. They don't want their bliss disturbed by informed arguments, and they get threatened by such arguments. As a result, they adopt arrogance as a way of making a level playing field.

If they believe something and someone comes along and threatens that belief with facts it becomes a "which one is right" situation, and they aren't going to let anyone else be right; because if that person is right it means they have to reconsider all they've fervently believed.

2. Arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand because the non-ingnorant know enough not to be arrogant.

3.They are making up for their lack of facts with arrogance and "puffing up"

They personalise their debating points. A debate to them is a battle of wills not an exchange of ideas. You have to seperate yourself and your ego from your point of view. If you don't, you can't allow yourself to be proved wrong, sorry, not so much you being proved wrong, but your ideas being proved wrong, because you have put your pride and ego on the line. You can avoid this by presenting your argument as something that is indepenent of you and, therefore, capable of being changed without loosing face. Instead of using direct language, such as, "It is", or even,"I think", you could say, " I would have thought"; giving yourself an escape route if you want to amend your argument later. This approach puts a distance between yourself and the point of view you are making.

i think it relates to intelligence. The stupider you are, the more aggressive you become in your ignorance as your mind eats itself with the attempt to rationalise your ignorance, thus resulting in aggression due to confusion. Arrogance is also due to intelligence levels-if you think you are always right, usually displayed by stupid people, they will be unaware of this resulting in arguments which they can never lose.
