I am going to San Fran in two days. Please tell me how to do this trip via public transportation. I will be coming from the SFO airport area so I imagine I should take the BART.

Here's my agenda:

Pier 43 1/2 to take the Golden Gate Bay Cruise (1 hour cruise)
Pier 47 on Al Scoma Way to eat lunch at Scoma's Restaurant
Pier 39 to get to Fisherman's Wharf

back to the SFO airport

I believe I will take the BART out of SFO unless I can take the bus. Time is not of the essence as I have all day to do any of this. Thanks in advance!

Thanks everybody. I plan on not carrying my purse with me at all. I am kinda tall and big so I think I would feel if someone was up on me.

take BART to and from SFO. You can walk around all the piers at the Wharf.

Here's a site to plan your public transportation to other areas of the city with Muni, buses, bart trains, cable cars, etc.

Take BART to Embarcadero Station.
Go up to the Street Level (Market Street) and cross into the center island. Take the F Trolley heading towards Fisherman's Wharf. Fare is $1.50.
Piers 39, 43 and 47 are VERY close to each other. At that end of the piers, they are numbered by odd numbers only, so after 39, comes 41 and then 43 and so on. You will be able to walk between piers in a matter of minutes.
There is an F Trolley stop at each of these locations. Just ask the driver or listen out for his announcements
When you are done, take the F Line back to the Embarcadero Station and back to SFO.
Travel time from Embarcadero to SFO is around 35-40 minutes.

My brother went to Culinary School there and lived there for a year. (Came home in Dec of 2005) to Bakersfield.

He also worked/internship at the Grotto down at the Fisherman's Wharf on the second floor while attending Culinary Academy. Good place. A little expensive, but good.

He mostly got around by foot (lost a lot of weight that way), the BART or the transit electric transportation he would have a monthly pass due to living there.

If you never been there before, then you will find out why having a vehicle can be quite the stressful event.

If you wanted to rent a motorized vehicle, rent a motorized bike. Easier to get around and park as well.

There is Bus's and taxi's too. Nothing much else other than having own/renting vehicle to get around.

If you to travel, becareful. My brother had his cell phone and wallet stolen riding on the tran. He got it back even though the guy said that was his. Clearly, it was my brothers since had my brothers ID and cell phone numbers and all that Jazz. Keep all things deep in your pockets, recommended to carry any items close to your body and wrap around your hands very tight.

My brother said "normally a bus stop almost every block, scheduals are usually like a bus every 7min, you just learn the scheduals or look online and type where you want to go and it tells you, how I always did it"

So, goodluck and have a lot of fun.

At SFO, take the BART (I believe there are no Muni buses that run as far as SFO) and get off at the Embarcadero BART. Take the Muni F Line street car. This street car runs along the Embarcadero, which is where the piers are. Muni drivers are generally helpful. Ask them which stop you should get off to get to Pier 43, 47, and 39. And check out Scoma's website to see whether you need to make reservations.

Keep your Muni ticket. You can still use it for transfers up to 90 minutes after you bought it.

Be aware of your surroundings and belongings. (I was pickpocketed about 4 years ago while riding a crowded bus. My wallet was stolen from inside my backpack.)

It is always helpful to have a Muni map, which you can buy at almost all Walgreens or Rite-Aid in SF for $3-5. Or check out the Muni map on the Muni website: http://transit.511.org/providers/maps/SF_928200510805.pdf

To go back to SFO, take the F Line back to the Embarcadero BART station and take the BART train that goes to the Millbrae / SFO.

San Francisco is easier to get around than LA because the city is like closed together and has many ways to do so, like the BART, the ever-famous cable cars, trolley buses, streetcars, and perhaps the taxi. That's one of the good reasons why I like to visit the city.
