Try out FREELANCER, it is a space simulation shooting game, freakin' cool.. The background of course is in space, and you get to start from a light fighter aircraft where you can upgrad it by adding new weapons on the given slots, if you have enough credit, you can even trade in your ship with better one. Other than space fighting, you can dock at most of the planet (is only one disc but the space is very huge, and they counted in SYSTEM), and perform commercing, accept mission, you can be a good guy by accepting the navy or military mission and you can also be a bad fella by joining the bounty hunter and get to visit their base that have cool weapons and stuff. Later on you will get to battle with the alien space craft and if you lucky enough you will get to locate the planet of the Ape (no joke). There's no border at all in the game, you may just travel as far as you want. Weapon wise, there's normal guns, turret (shoot backward), counter measure dropper (distract missiles), missiles, mine, torpedo, and much more. Try if you like this type of game. I've played it 3 times...
