Chance of Overheating
Screen Etching if you do not use a Screen-saver
Other people playing with it (security)
Yes
Hard Drives etc do not like to be rebooted
Long Boot up Times
Basically if you are using it every couple of hours, leave it on, but in a stand-by mode.
Do some work on improving the Boot up and close down speeds, there are tons of ways this can be done: look out for an article in any good computer magazine or put another Question on here
One fast way to turn off is this.
Make a shortcut on your desktop. When the location come up, type this "shutdown -s -t 00" this will make an icon on the desktop that instantly shuts-down the PC, rather than waiting as it already does. No Menes to wade into

Yes, it's no problem. If anything, it is a little bit better for the computer to run continuously than be booted every day or several times a day. Booting up is a little bit of a shock on system. But either way won't make that much difference in the overall wear and tear on the computer. Screen savers are still nice to have although current displays don't have quite the problem, if any, with burn that older models had.

I leave mine on all the time, I was told that my power supply and all that in my tower would last longer something like it takes more power to shut off and boot up and shortens the life of the PC. I have had mine now for almost 4 years and it works perfect. Only time it gos off is if we have a storm.

I have four desktops, I only turn them off a few times per month. At my husband's job the computers are never restarted unless there's an update. He's a Systems Analyst-he says computers were designed to stay on. To preserve your moniter from burning out you can just turn off the moniter at night or make sure your screen saver kicks in after a short time eg 30 minutes (I usually turn my moniters off at night or when we're not using the computer)
If you're using a laptop simply set it to hibernate. (control, alt, delete, shut down, hibernate ok)

If you have a desktop, leaving the computer on all day and night is not a problem (only exception is when your computer already running very slow)
If you have a laptop, then you have to be careful not to burn it. sometimes the fan can be overheating. I have a 2004 late iBook and I put it to sleep whenever I am not using it. I haven't turn off my laptop for almost 2 months, and it's still working fine.

If you have an active internet connection and no firewall, no.
If you have an active internet connection and a firewall, sure.
If you're running Linux, you could go weeks/months on end without having to shut down. The longest I've been able to keep Windows up and running for days on end was five days, and that was because the environment simply became too unstable and I blue-screened.

It's OK to keep it on all day. As long as you are log off of all Internet programs. It's not safe to have it on while its on the Internet because hackers they will try to mess up your computer. I heard they could just drive past your house and if your on the Internet they could hack into your computer and mess it up. So just be careful. Do what you think is best for your computer. After all it's your computer and you can do whatever you want to it.

In theory "NO" and booting it doesnt help..You use up lots of power by leaving it on plus virus's have all day access so to speak. Turn it off and by the sounds of things you need to look into getting a better srvice provider where you are able to access cable or ADSL system. good luck!
