In Arthur C Clarke's 2001, A Space Odyseey, the Computer, H.A.L tries to destroy the Astronauts. Interesting to note that every letter after H.A.L reads I.B.M. And as many believe this company is an arm of the C.I.A, was he trying to tell us something?

I agree Tekno, just Clarke having a bit of fun? But he tend to be cyptic with his writing.
Island Queen, I know it was just a movie! But it is based on Clarke's story! He wrote it not me! Wake up. I know it must take the best part of the day for your brain to function correctly.

maybe he was just trying to be intellectualy funny. probably just an inside joke. did the movie change the world? probably not. will it matter in a hundred years. who knows. i think it would be easier for a film maker or writer to address the topic directly. without beating around the bush or making any cryptic references. so i'm going to have to go with my first impression. it was just a clever movie.
