Why did they take Mariano out after just 1 inning?
Couldn't he have gone at least one more?
Those White Sox just wouldn't give up like I thought they would!
What do you guys think?

I think it is wonderful. And the Mariners win, too, thanks to a walk-off grand slam by Richie Sexson (figure this one out...he is hitting under .230 but leads the team in HR and is second in RBI...talk about clutch hitting). Lou Piniella is still scratching his head over that one as he ordered two intentional walks to get at Sexson.
For the non-Yankee-hating answer, it is traditional to use the closer for one inning only. Rarely do you see an extra third of an inning (J.J. Putz did that in the first game of the series against Tampa Bay), and even more rarely does the closer go two innings. It's specialization with a vengeance, and the idea is to not wear out your closer's arm so he can pitch whenever needed.
And why should the White Sox give up? They are fighting for their wild-card lives!

I am glad the white sox won. I hope they sweep the yankees.
Even though The Detroit Tigers are trying to win the Central Division title away from the white sox. The Tigers can afford to lose a game or two in the standings, whereas The Red Sox are not so fortunate.

I think they should have left Mariano in. Chicago has a dominant lineup and can surprise at the least expected times. Being a Tigers fan, I really want the Sox to lose in this series.

I agree with safdar........as long as the stink sox are sinking and stinking, it doesn;t really matter now. Mariano was having a bad day it happens. I am glad to see the many yankee fans out here though!!!!
