The ring would have fallen straight down unless there was a current. Simply have the diver go down, you drop a penny where the ring was supposed to have fallen in and the penny should fall close to where the ring did. Use some screen to shift the mud.
I just hope that you hired an honest diver.

yes you can try metal detecting- you might need a special one. I saw a gut metal detecting in waist deep water in Honolulu last year. but 7 ft of water might cause some problems since it's so deep. good luck
