I pull into an adjacent lane, where available, to let the other car pass. In California, if there is only one lane, the law says a car must pull over to let traffic around when there are five or more vehicles behind you. Once in a while, someone obeys the law.

If I am being tailgated and I'm already traveling at the legal speed limit, then the idiot on my tail is out of luck until a passing lane comes up, when I pull over to let the person guzzle up gasoline even quicker.

I tap the brakes a few times and if that does not work I slam them on, after of course I slide my pistol from under the seat.

Not really. If I am going slow, I get the message and move over, if I am going the speed limit I just maintain my speed and let them do what they want. I do not brake and try to make a wreck.

I've done all of the above. At this point I just move over if I can. If not then I slow down. I figure that if they are going to rear end me then they are going to do it a a lower speed. One of these days I'm going to see one of these idiots a few miles ahead of me with their vehicle upside down. I'll stop to make sure there were no kids inside but they'll be lucky if I do anything else to help them. Sorry but I don't have a lot of tolerance for people who put others at risk. They sure weren't thinking about my safety.

Well, slowing down I wouldn't recommend, then you inconvenience yourself. Speeding up is wrong too, because the tailgater wil just keep on you, and you'll get hit by the radar first if you speed up. I like to do that. Follow someone going really fast, then they get hit with the radar. Although, I don't tailgate them.
The Utah Drivers License Division recommends that you move over when it's safe, so the tailgater may pass.

I think that all depends on the age and condition of your car as well as the quality of your insurance.
Personally I slowdown by shifting gears and I don't use the brake pedal so no brake lights comes on. I figure if the guy wants to drive that close, he better be paying attention that close too. Also I have a 1984 car with a dent in the back. If he hits me, I will be able to get my dent fixed for free. Not to mention the huge insurance check I get for the whiplash I will most certainly get from the impact of his vehicle into mine. :<)

I know someone that was being tailgated, so they sped up really fast, then slammed on the brake. It isn't the safest thing to do, but that person backed off and turned off as soon as possible! If it were me, I would move over and not anger the other person.

If a few taps of the brake lights doesn't get the point accross after a few tries, I will use the brakes to their fullest extent. I have been known to discuss the matter along the side of the road.

Do neither. I recommend hitting your hazards for 2-3 flashes. That usually gets the persons who is tailgating you attention to back off. If this does not work, simply maintain your speed and let them go around you.

Speed isn't the only issue, it's YOUR distance from the guy in front, becuase if you've got to stop quickly, you've got to have enough time for both of you to react - you and the numbskull behind you.

Maintain your speed, don't do anything to aggrevate the situation (flashers, brake dabbing etc) and let them past when it's safe to...
